Understanding Barrett’s Esophagus

Learn about Barrett's Esophagus

EsophagusBurned Esophagus

Barrett’s Esophagus (BE) is a serious condition that affects the lining of the esophagus, the swallowing tube that carries food and liquids to the stomach.

BE and acid reflux disease have the same symptoms and if BE is left undetected, it is difficult to treat. Without treatment, BE can lead to cancer of the esophagus, a much more serious and fatal condition.

Only a physician can determine if you have Barrett’s Esophagus. The accuracy of their diagnosis is vital for your health and treatment.

These images demonstrates the progression from healthy tissue to cancerous tissue, as seen from farther away versus on a microscopic level. Because chronic GERD and BE share the same symptoms, clear visualization of all your tissue within the are of concern is the only way to know what is going on inside your body. With an acute and more comprehensive diagnosis, your physician can eliminate the potential for BE to become cancer. Treatment options include destruction of the BE tissue, more frequent endoscopies to monitor the area of concern, and esophageal surgery.
